Islamabad (Web Desk/Agencies): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged all Pakistanis and the international community to reaffirm their commitment to environmental conservation.
In his message on the first International Markhor Day being observed on Friday (May 24), he said the Markhor represents our resolve to preserve biodiversity and maintain ecological balance.
The prime minister said this day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) acknowledges Pakistan's efforts and successes in wildlife conservation.
He said Pakistan takes pride in the majestic creature, Markhor being its national animal that symbolizes its rich natural heritage.
PM Shehbaz said that there has been a significant increase in the Markhor's population over the past decade which testifies Pakistan's unwavering dedication to protect natural environment.
He said our conservation programs, supported by local communities and scientific research, have shown that with collective effort, we can reverse the decline of endangered species.
“Pakistan, as a committed signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), proudly announced its significant elevation to CITES Category I. This elevation is a testament to the nation’s unwavering dedication to wildlife conservation and the sustainable management of our natural resources,” PM Shehbaz said.
PM Shehbaz called for joining hands to protect not only the Markhor but all species enriching the planet's biodiversity, to secure a sustainable future for posterity.
