Extreme heat threat: PDMA recommends early summer vacations in Punjab schools

Lahore (Web Desk): In light of the anticipated extreme heatwaves for May and June 2025, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab, has recommended that schools begin their summer holidays earlier than usual to safeguard students from the harsh temperatures.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), temperatures in Punjab and Sindh are expected to reach between 40°C and 44°C, with potential heatwave conditions starting from mid-May.

In Punjab, the School Education Department is expected to announce that the summer vacation will begin on May 15, 2025, rather than the typical start date of June 1. The holidays will continue until August 14, 2025, for both public and private schools.

Last year, due to temperatures reaching as high as 46.4°C in Bathinda, schools were closed earlier from May 25. Although Sindh has not yet confirmed the 2025 dates, it is anticipated that they will follow Punjab's lead, with schools closing from June 1 to August 15, as in previous years.

It is also likely that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and Balochistan will align with Punjab’s schedule, starting their vacations in mid-May or early June.

The PDMA has advised educational institutions to modify their schedules, provide clean drinking water, prohibit outdoor activities, and improve ventilation in classrooms to help mitigate the risks of the extreme heat.

Parents are encouraged to stay informed through official updates from provincial education departments or school websites, as private schools may have different holiday schedules.

Students are also urged to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest hours, and take part in indoor activities during the break.
