PSL 10: Karachi Kings beat Peshawar Zalmi by 2 wickets

Karachi (Web Desk): Karachi Kings defeated Peshawar Zalmi by two wickets, thanks to a composed half-century from David Warner and a clutch finish by Khushdil Shah in the 11th match of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium on Monday.

Chasing a modest target of 148 on a tricky surface, the Kings crossed the finish line with three balls to spare as Hasan Ali sealed the win in style, flicking Hussain Talat for a boundary to the leg side in the final over. But the chase was anything but smooth for the 2020 champions.

The innings got off to a disastrous start when Tim Seifert was dismissed on the very first ball of the reply, undone by a sharp in-swinger from Luke Wood. Wood continued to trouble the top order and struck again in his next over, this time removing fellow Englishman James Vince for 11 off 9.

Warner then attempted to stabilize the innings, finding brief support from young Saad Baig, who chipped in with 9 runs in a 23-run partnership before falling to Ali Raza. The veteran left-hander built crucial stands with Muhammad Irfan Khan (10), Mohammad Nabi (14), and Khushdil Shah to keep the Kings in the hunt

Warner was eventually dismissed by the outstanding Luke Wood in the 17th over after a well-paced 60 off 47 balls, decorated with eight boundaries. At that point, Karachi still needed 29 off 21 deliveries. The tension escalated as the hosts lost two quick wickets, slumping to 133 for 8 in 18.1 overs.

Khushdil Shah, however, remained calm under pressure. The left-hander guided the innings home with a steady unbeaten 23 off 17 balls, hitting three boundaries in the process to snatch a win from the jaws of defeat.

Luke Wood emerged as the pick of the bowlers for Zalmi, claiming 3 for 28 in his four overs, while Ali Raza bagged two wickets. Arif Yaqoob and Alzarri Joseph chipped in with a wicket each.

Earlier in the evening, Peshawar Zalmi were put in to bat and struggled to post a competitive total, finishing at 147 for 8. Saim Ayub was the first to go, managing just 4 before departing in the third over. Skipper Babar Azam then tried to steady the ship, adding a brief stand with Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who scored 7 before being dismissed by Khushdil Shah in the seventh over.

Babar looked in good touch, crafting a 41-ball 46 that included seven boundaries. He later partnered with Mohammad Haris for a 31-run stand before falling, again to Khushdil. Haris played a handy knock of 28 off 21, laced with four boundaries, but couldn’t convert it into a big one.

Hussain Talat added 18 off 16 balls in a 37-run fourth-wicket stand with Haris but became Aamir Jamal’s only victim as Zalmi's innings began to unravel. The collapse that followed saw them lose four wickets in quick succession, closing the innings on a below-par total.

Khushdil Shah was instrumental with the ball too, returning figures of 3 for 21, while Mir Hamza and Aamir Jamal took one wicket apiece. Mohammad Abbas also made his mark with three key breakthroughs.

The narrow victory lifts Karachi Kings to second place on the PSL 10 points table, overtaking Lahore Qalandars with six points from five matches. Peshawar Zalmi, meanwhile, stay in fourth as the playoff race intensifies.
