Islamabad (Web Desk): The Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday dismissed a plea to take suo motu notice regarding the deaths and violence that occurred during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests in Islamabad.
The five-member Constitutional Bench of the SC, headed by Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, was hearing several petitions, including those related to climate change and the petition filed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan concerning the merger of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
During the proceedings, Advocate Babar Awan, representing PTI Chairman, informed the court that FATA had already been merged with KP, and thus no further action was needed on the matter.
In response, the Advocate General (AG) for KP, appearing via video link, urged the court to intervene and take suo motu notice of the alleged use of force and the reported killings during the protests, citing the court’s authority in such matters.
However, the bench rejected this request, pointing out that the issue was not part of the petitions being heard.
Justice Musarrat Hilali particularly reprimanded the KP Advocate General for trying to drag the court into political matters unrelated to the ongoing proceedings.
