Beijing (Web Desk): China, Russia and Iran jointly called for putting an end to all illegal unilateral sanctions, after senior diplomats from the three countries gathered in Beijing on Friday for talks on Tehran’s nuclear issues.
The meeting was chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and attended by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
They discussed the ongoing issues related to Tehran’s nuclear activities, underlining the significance of the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Ma Zhaoxu emphasized the need for all parties to address the root causes of the current crisis and reject both the pressure of sanctions and the threat of force.
In his remarks to the media following the meeting, Ma reiterated the importance of adhering to United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution 2231, which supports the JCPOA. He stressed that this resolution is key to resolving the issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.
The three countries collectively urged all relevant parties to avoid actions that could further escalate tensions and to work towards creating a more favourable environment for diplomatic negotiations.
China reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining an impartial stance, actively encouraging dialogue, and playing a constructive role in facilitating a peaceful, political resolution to the Iranian nuclear issue.
It is pertinent to mention that Iran signed the nuclear deal, formally known as JCPOA, with six world powers in July 2015, agreeing to restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.
However, during Trump’s first term, the United States (US) withdrew from the agreement in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions, prompting Iran to scale back some of its nuclear commitments.
