Lahore (Web Desk/Agencies): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Thursday launched the 'Khelta Punjab' Inter-Division Games 2025, an event aimed at reviving sports and engaging the province’s youth in healthy, competitive activities.
Addressing athletes and sports officials at Punjab Stadium, she expressed her joy in being surrounded by such vibrant young talent, highlighting her desire to see youth excel not only in sports but also in education and various other fields.
She shared her vision of seeing champions emerge from every corner of Punjab, emphasizing that the games were designed to bring more opportunities to the youth.
The 'Khelta Punjab' Games, a pioneering initiative, are now in their final phase. The competition began with inter-club events held throughout the province, followed by district-level contests, and now the division-level games are underway.
The Punjab CM applauded the efforts of Sports Minister Faisal Ayub Khokhar for organizing the country's largest sports competition, and reiterated her commitment to allocating whatever funds necessary for the success of the project.
She assured that the provincial government’s financial resources would be made available to support the youth, no matter the amount required.
She proudly spoke of the achievements of young athletes, mentioning that 120,000 athletes had registered for the games, with many now following in the footsteps of champions like javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem and tennis player Aismaul Haq.
The chief minister pointed out that 65% of Punjab’s population consists of youth, and it was crucial to offer them the platform to realize their full potential.
Maryam Nawaz also recognized the hard work of those who had qualified for the division-level competitions, noting that the event saw participation from over 15,000 sports clubs, and 30,000 athletes were awarded sports scholarships.
She assured the athletes that the government would continue to support them, with a focus on providing resources like financial aid, sports infrastructure, and professional training.
She also highlighted that the young athletes, who are already earning stipends of Rs60,000 a month, were the pride of their families and the country.
Urging the youth to remain dedicated to their sports and educational pursuits, the chief minister made it clear that her government would always prioritize their well-being and provide the necessary facilities.
She stressed the importance of hiring international coaches to help athletes reach their highest potential, ensuring they bring home medals for the country.
In her speech, she also addressed the youth’s role in maintaining peace and stability, urging them to stay focused on positive endeavours and not be swayed by those who might encourage unrest or anti-state activities.
To further motivate the athletes, Maryam Nawaz announced that the top 2,200 winners of the divisional-level competitions would be awarded free e-bikes.
This gesture was meant to recognize their efforts and encourage them to continue striving for excellence in their respective sports.
