Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made a formal decision to join the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), as announced on Monday after a special meeting of the party's political committee the night before.
The JCP is responsible for nominating judges for constitutional benches in the Supreme Court and high courts, as per the newly introduced Article 191A in the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
This article establishes that these benches will consist of judges nominated by the JCP, ensuring equal representation from each province.
In its resolution, PTI will nominate two members from each house of parliament to represent the party in the JCP and will notify National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq of this decision.
The party's statement highlighted the expanded role of the 13-member commission, which will now include monitoring the performance of high court judges and preparing their annual performance evaluations.
“The judicial commission is also empowered to suggest suitable names for high court judges,” the statement said, adding that “one-third of the members of the judicial commission may call a meeting.”
The statement further clarified that decisions within the JCP will be made by a simple majority and that the absence of any member will not invalidate the commission's decisions.
The participation of the two opposition members will be particularly important in the decision-making process.
The proposal for PTI's participation in the JCP received unanimous support from the political committee and will be sent to the core committee for ratification, along with a final approval from the party founder.
An official announcement will be made once Imran Khan approves the nominations.
The statement added that during the meeting, the PTI reiterated its position regarding the 26th Constitutional Amendment, reaffirming its commitment to the principles established in the amendment.
