Jason Gillespie appointed as white-ball head coach for Australia tour after Gary Kirsten's resignation

Lahore (Web Desk): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed Jason Gillespie as the head coach for the white-ball format as the team prepares for its tour of Australia.

This decision comes in the wake of Gary Kirsten's resignation from the same position due to ongoing disagreements with the PCB.

Gillespie, who is currently the head coach for the red-ball team, will guide the players during their upcoming ODI and T20I series against Australia, which kicks off on November 4.

The squad is scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is against Australia, followed by a similar series against Zimbabwe.

Kirsten's resignation stems from a variety of issues that arose between him and the PCB.

Although he was appointed as the white-ball coach alongside Gillespie’s red-ball role in April under two-year contracts, tensions escalated over his commitment to the team.

Reports indicate that Kirsten preferred to join the squad shortly before the series, a stance that contradicted the terms of his contract requiring him to be more available.

Additionally, Kirsten faced criticism for not being present during and after the Champions Cup, despite being reminded of his obligation to remain available for 11 months.

He also expressed dissatisfaction over his input in team selection and preferences regarding central contracts.

Kirsten’s insistence on changes, including threats not to accompany the team unless a contract for the mental performance coach was addressed, further complicated matters.

The PCB's recent restructuring of the selection committee, which now excludes the head coaches and captain, added another layer of contention.

The revamped panel now consists of five members, including notable figures like Aqib Javed and Azhar Ali.

With Kirsten no longer in the picture, Aqib Javed is viewed as a strong candidate to step into the role of white-ball head coach.

This change is intended to stabilize the coaching situation and refocus the team as they gear up for their important matches against Australia and Zimbabwe.

The PCB is optimistic that Gillespie’s experience will help guide the team effectively in these upcoming series.
