United Nations (Web Desk): International Day of Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is being observed today.

Established by the UN General Assembly in 2013 through resolution 68/32 this day aims to raise awareness of the existential dangers posed by nuclear weapons and promote their complete elimination.

In his message on the day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has urged nuclear-weapon states to lead the way by honouring their disarmament obligations, and committing never to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances.

“The only way to eliminate the nuclear threat is to eliminate nuclear weapons,” the UN chief said.
