New York (Web Desk): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday passed a resolution demanding ceasefire for the rest of Ramadan.
According to international media reports, the United States (US) abstained from voting while the other 14 council members including Russia, China and the United Kingdom (UK) voted in favour.
The resolution also demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
The Security Council resolution also “emphasises the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to and reinforce the protection of civilians in the entire Gaza Strip and reiterates its demand for the lifting of all barriers to the provision of humanitarian assistance at scale”.
Earlier on Friday, the UNSC turned down a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an Israel-Hamas hostage deal after Russia and China vetoed the measure proposed by the US.
The resolution, on which Algeria also voted no and Guyana abstained, called for an immediate and sustained ceasefire lasting roughly six weeks that would protect civilians and allow for the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
