ECP notifies 39 MNAs as PTI lawmakers in line with SC order

Islamabad (Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared 39 Members of National Assembly (MNAs) as member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in line with the Supreme Court’s (SC) July 12 verdict.

The ECP has uploaded the notification on its website.

"In pursuance of the order of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, dated July 12 2024, the following returned candidates against general seats of the National Assembly are declared to have been returned as candidates of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)," the notification read.

The PTI MNAs, who have been notified by the ECP, were those who had shown their party affiliation with the Imran-founded party in their nomination papers before the 2024 general elections.

The PTI candidates contested the general election as independent after they were deprived of bat symbol and later these independent candidates were directed by the party leadership to join Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC).

After winning the most seats in the general polls earlier this year, PTI was denied reserved seats by the ECP while the Peshawar High Court (PHC) upheld the electoral body’s decision citing that the party failed to submit list of candidates for reserved seats in the stipulated time.

On July 12, the top court ruled that the PTI was and is a political party that won general seats in the national and provincial assemblies in the February 8 elections, thus, is entitled to reserved seats.

Separately, the ECP has approached the SC for guidelines about 41 independent members to implement the decision of July 12, regarding the reserved seats.

The ECP has submitted an application to Registrar Office of the top court in this regard.

It said that 41 members had submitted the documents regarding the party affiliation with the indication that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would confirm it.

The application said that there was no party structure of PTI in the records of the ECP and questioned that who would confirm the party affiliation of the independent members in the absence of its basic structure.
