US, Qatar announce resumption of Gaza ceasefire negotiations in Doha

Doha (Web Desk/Agencies): The United States and Qatar have reinitiated discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza, following Secretary of State Antony Blinken's latest visit to the region.

This marks Blinken's eleventh trip since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, during which Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar was killed.

Blinken highlighted the pressing need for a resolution, stating that negotiations would resume shortly to address the prolonged conflict and secure the release of hostages taken during the attack.

He emphasized the goal of formulating a strategy that facilitates Israel's withdrawal, prevents Hamas from regaining power, and allows the Palestinian people to rebuild their lives.

The Qatari Prime Minister confirmed that delegations from the US and Israel would meet in Doha to discuss the ceasefire.

An Israeli delegation is scheduled to arrive in Doha this Sunday. Despite past challenges in reaching an agreement, Blinken suggested that Sinwar's death might create a new opportunity for dialogue.

Ongoing negotiations have faced hurdles, particularly due to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's demand for a continued military presence along the Gaza-Egypt border.

According to international media, US officials have identified Sinwar's leadership as a significant obstacle, but with his removal, there is cautious optimism for progress.

Meanwhile, Hamas has yet to select a successor to Sinwar, with indications that the group may move toward a committee-based leadership model.

Blinken expressed the US's readiness to consider new approaches for addressing the Gaza crisis, alongside a focus on the region’s reconstruction and governance after the conflict.

In a bid to provide immediate relief, Blinken announced an additional $135 million in aid for Palestinians, increasing the total US assistance since the onset of hostilities to approximately $1.2 billion.
