Earth Hour 2025: President, PM reaffirm commitment to energy conservation

Islamabad (Web Desk): President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif have vowed to stand with the global community in reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to energy conservation, environmental sustainability, and climate action.

“As we switch off non-essential lights, let this act serve as a symbol of our resolve to reduce energy consumption, minimize our carbon footprint and protect Pakistan’s ecosystems,”

President Zardari said in his message on the occasion of Earth Hour and World Water Day 2025.

“We must build climate-resilient infrastructure, prevent water pollution and promote sustainable agricultural practices,” he said.

The president urged all Pakistanis to conserve electricity, fuel and water, embrace sustainable habits and take responsibility for a greener and more resilient Pakistan.

In his message on the occasion, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government is actively pursuing policies that integrate climate action across all

“Our commitment to renewable energy expansion, plastic waste reduction and green job creation is laying the foundation for long-term environmental stewardship,” the premier said.

“However, policies alone are not enough and true change begins at home,” PM Shehbaz noted

The prime minister said every action, no matter how small, strengthens the collective momentum toward a sustainable tomorrow.

World Water Day is being observed today (Saturday) across the globe including Pakistan to raise awareness about the need for sustainable water management and conservation.
This year the theme of the day is ‘Glacier Preservation’.

Glaciers are critical to life and their rapid melting is threatening animal and plant life.

Meanwhile, the annual earth hour will be observed in Pakistan tonight like other countries of the world, the Radio Pakistan reported.

It encourages the individuals, communities and businesses to give an hour for earth be switching off non-essential electric light for an hour from 8:30 to 9:30pm

It is pertinent to mention that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) designated March 22 as World Water Day in 1993, following the recommendation of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.

Since then, the day has been marked annually with different themes, highlighting various aspects of the global water crisis.
