Former cricketer, umpire Nazir Junior passes away in Lahore

Lahore (Web Desk): Mohammad Nazir (Junior), the former Pakistani cricketer turned umpire, passed away on Thursday at the age of 78 following a lengthy illness.

Nazir played 14 Test matches and 4 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan between 1969 and 1984, taking 39 wickets during his career. His debut performance in 1969 against New Zealand was historic, as he became the first spinner to take seven wickets for 99 runs in a Test match.

After retiring from playing, Nazir Junior transitioned into umpiring, officiating in 15 ODIs and 5 Test matches.

He was widely admired for his cricketing insight and his significant role in mentoring emerging talent within the sport.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed grief over the death of former Pakistani cricketer and umpire Muhammad Nazeer Junior.

In a statement, the prime minister said that late Nazeer Junior brought fame to the country in the field of cricket through his fabulous performance.

He said that late Nazeer Junior’s achievements as cricketer and umpire was a pride for the entire nation.

PM Shehbaz prayed to Allah Almighty for peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family to bear the loss.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and the cricketing fraternity have expressed deep sorrow over sad demise of Nazir Junior and paid tribute to his enduring contributions to Pakistan cricket.
