New York (Agencies): The UN General Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution reaffirming the international community’s continued support for people’s right to self-determination as a fundamental human right.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN Maleeha Lodhi announced on Twitter the record 85 countries co-sponsored the resolution. The 193-member Assembly’s Third Committee, which deals with social, humanitarian and cultural issues, has adopted the resolution.

“Cosponsorship by 83 countries of Pakistan ‘s resolution on self-determination was reaffirmation of the international community’s continued support for people’s right to self-determination as a fundamental human right,” said Lodhi.

The adoption of the resolution on self-determination sends a message to people struggling against the foreign occupation that they are not helpless in their efforts, she said.
Lodi added that promoting the people’s right to self-determination was a part of the UN’s basic principles.
