Kabul (Web Desk/Agencies): At least 52 people died and 65 others injured in two separate bus crashes in central Afghanistan.
According to officials, the accidents occurred on the Kabul-Kandahar Highway in Ghazni province late Wednesday.
The first collision happened near Shahbaz village, where a bus collided with a fuel tanker, while the second involved a bus crashing into a truck in the Andar district.
The Taliban government’s chief spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, expressed deep regret over the loss of life.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the crash sites, and the injured were rushed to hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.
The authorities have not disclosed the exact number of victims in each crash.
Traffic accidents are a frequent problem in Afghanistan, often due to a combination of poorly maintained roads, lack of safety regulations, and reckless driving.
This tragic incident follows a pattern of similar crashes, including a fatal bus collision with a fuel tanker in March that killed more than 20 people in Helmand province.
In December 2022, a fuel tanker accident in the Salang Pass resulted in 31 deaths and dozens of burn injuries.
The country’s road network, still recovering from decades of conflict, remains a significant safety hazard, particularly on busy routes like the Kabul-Kandahar highway.
Despite ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, road accidents continue to be a major concern for the Afghan population.
