Islamabad (Staff Report): Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday sought recommendations from parliamentarians on the issue of granting citizenship to Afghan and Bengali refugees.
“Before taking a final decision on the matter, a consensus will be reached,” Khan said while taking to the floor of the Lower House. "Everyone should present their recommendations," he added.
He added that the issue is one of human rights and it is imperative that decisive action is taken in this regard and refugee children in Pakistan deserve to be given Pakistani citizenship.
The premier also referred to law applicable throughout the world and reiterated that children born in this country deserve to be given the country’s citizenship.
PM Imran further explained that the reason for rising street crime in Karachi is the increase in unemployment. "Immigrant children are not granted citizenship owing to which they are refused jobs and they cannot even go to school and this problem is about to enter all our societies," he upheld.
