Islamabad (Web Desk): President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan's unwavering commitment to fostering regional maritime cooperation, aiming to promote peace, progress, and sustainability in the Indian Ocean.
Addressing the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Cooperation, via a video message, he called for a unified approach to tackle the growing challenges posed by climate change, pollution, and the deterioration of marine ecosystems while unlocking the vast economic potential of the ocean.
Held in Kunming, China, the forum, organized by the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), focused on strengthening collaboration among countries in the maritime sector.
President Zardari reiterated Pakistan's readiness to work closely with all partners to ensure the region remains a symbol of peace and prosperity.
He emphasized the importance of the Indian Ocean for future global economic growth, pointing to the vast natural resources and large population of the region as key factors driving its economic potential.
The president also highlighted Pakistan's ongoing efforts to develop its blue economy, including the creation of the National Maritime Policy, initiatives for sustainable fisheries, marine conservation programs, and the Living Indus Project, aimed at protecting ecosystems and reducing pollution.
He further drew attention to the development of Gwadar Port, a key project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which is being transformed into a crucial center for regional connectivity, trade, and maritime economic development.
President Zardari expressed appreciation for the collaboration between Pakistan and China under the Belt and Road Initiative, noting the role it plays in advancing technological innovation, sharing knowledge, and promoting marine conservation.
He commended the CIDCA’s focus on sustainability and its efforts to include island nations in the forum’s discussions, aligning with Pakistan’s vision for transnational cooperation and environmental stewardship.
President Zardai expressed confidence that the forum would pave the way for stronger economic partnerships among participating countries.
He called for a concerted, collective effort to protect marine resources and advance the blue economy for the benefit of future generations.
