Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and National Assembly (NA) Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri on Saturday resigned from his office ahead of no-confidence vote against him.
The no confidence motion against Suri was submitted by the former opposition and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Member of National Assembly (MNA) Murtaza Javed Abbasi.
Following the deputy speaker's resignation, the no-confidence motion holds no value, while the newly-elected speaker will decide on whether to accept the resignation or not.
In line with the NA rules, immediately after the election of the speaker, the assembly shall proceed to elect a deputy speaker and once elected, he will take oath before the assembly.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who is the lone contender for the NA speaker's position, will be administered the oath in today's session.
The office of the speaker had fallen vacant after Asad Qaiser tendered his resignation on April 9 in line with the PTI’s decision minutes before the voting on the no-confidence resolution against then-prime minister Imran Khan.
Once the assembly elects its speaker today, the focus will move on to the election of deputy speaker.
