Islamabad (Web Desk): International Day of Rural Women is being observed today (Tuesday) across the globe including Pakistan.
The objective of the day is to recognize rural women's importance in enhancing agricultural and rural development worldwide.
This year’s theme, "Rural Women Sustaining Nature for Our Collective Future: Building climate resilience, conserving biodiversity, and caring for land towards gender equality and empowerment," highlights the pivotal role rural women play.
This theme underlines the importance of rural women as key actors in promoting environmental sustainability and climate resilience while also emphasizing the need for gender equality.
In her message on International Day of Rural Women, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz highlighted the vital role of rural women in managing both household duties and contributing to farming and livestock development.
She reiterated the Punjab government’s unwavering commitment to their welfare, emphasizing the importance of providing equal opportunities and essential facilities to support their growth and empowerment.
The CM paid tribute to the strength, sacrifices, and tireless efforts of rural women.
She described them as living examples of hard work, love, responsibility, and selflessness, highlighting their significant role in strengthening the agricultural economy.
The CM mentioned the ongoing Field Hospital Project aimed at providing healthcare services to rural women, along with the upgrade of Basic Health Units (BHUs) in rural areas.
She noted that Skill Development Programme (SDP) being developed for rural women, and initiatives to provide livestock to support their economic independence and growth.
CM Maryam highlighted the establishment of Virtual Police Stations to ensure the protection of women’s rights across all social groups, reiterating the government’s active efforts in promoting the welfare of rural women.
According to the United Nations (UN), The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on October 15 in 2008.
This day was established by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 62/136 on December 18, 2007.
It recognizes “the critical role and contribution of rural women in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.”
Many people, government agencies, community groups and non-government associations celebrate the International Day of Rural Women on October 15 every year.
Television, radio, online websites, and print media also broadcast or publish the special features to promote the day.
Rural women are at the forefront of the battle lines when natural resources and agriculture are threatened.
