Islamabad (Web Desk): An Islamabad anti-terrorism court has released 32 individuals who were arrested in connection with the protests at D-Chowk last month, while 50 others have been placed under judicial remand.
The arrests were linked to the violent demonstrations that took place following Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former premier Imran Khan’s call for nationwide protests on November 24.
Khan had demanded the restoration of his party’s electoral mandate, the release of detained members, and the reversal of the 26th Amendment, which he claimed had strengthened an authoritarian regime.
The protests quickly escalated into clashes between PTI supporters and security forces, culminating in intense confrontations across the federal capital.
By the early hours of November 27, the party leadership and protesters were forced to retreat from the heavily secured Red Zone.
The three days of unrest resulted in at least six deaths, including that of a policeman and three Rangers personnel who were struck by a speeding vehicle.
The incident sparked heated debate, with both the government and the PTI offering differing accounts of the causes behind the deaths.
While the government claims that law enforcement’s actions were justified, the opposition accuses the authorities of using excessive force.
These disputes have only deepened the rift between the two sides, and the political situation remains fraught as legal proceedings continue.
