Info minister proposes global framework to counter misinformation

Istanbul (Web Desk): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar recently proposed the establishment of an international regulatory framework aimed at combating misinformation and promoting ethical standards for the benefit of humanity.

During his address at the STARTCOM summit in Istanbul, he emphasized the importance of using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a constructive manner, particularly in sectors like health, education, agriculture, and finance, to create positive outcomes for people worldwide.

Tarar acknowledged the global struggle with misinformation, explaining that it often leads to instability and can result in far-reaching consequences.

He pointed out that AI is being misused on social media, particularly when it comes to sensitive issues such as Gaza, Kashmir, and Lebanon, where the narratives are manipulated.

The minister also highlighted the challenge faced by individuals like Burhan Wani, a Kashmiri freedom fighter, whose name or image cannot be shared on social media platforms due to the negative use of AI in controlling discussions.

Tarar also reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to developing and executing AI policies that uphold the highest ethical standards.

He mentioned the launch of the Pakistan Digital Dialogue, an initiative that integrates AI and Large Language Models to better gauge public opinion and address the needs of the population.

Furthermore, Tarar spoke about the government's significant investment in youth training, noting that one million young people will be trained in the IT sector in the coming year.
