5.5 magnitude earthquake jolts Islamabad, tremors felt in parts of Pakistan

Islamabad (Web Desk): A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted various parts of northern Pakistan on Saturday, creating a wave of concern among residents across multiple regions.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed that the tremors were recorded at 12:31 pm local time, with the epicentre located roughly 60 kilometers northwest of Rawalpindi.

The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 12 kilometers, contributing to the intensity of the shocks felt on the surface.

Residents in Islamabad and Rawalpindi reported significant shaking, prompting many to rush out of buildings and homes in alarm.

The tremors were not limited to the capital region; they also spread across several parts of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces, with reports of vibrations coming from areas including Swat, Swabi, Buner, Sangla Hill, and nearby towns.

In Punjab, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujrat experienced the quake as well. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage have been reported at this stage.

Despite the absence of immediate destruction, authorities have placed emergency services and response teams on high alert to swiftly address any potential aftershocks or delayed impacts.

Meanwhile, the DG PDMA Punjab stated that both the provincial control room and district-level emergency operation centers are maintaining 24/7 vigilance.

Citizens have been encouraged to report any incidents or emergencies by contacting the PDMA helpline at 1129.

While the situation is currently under control, residents are advised to remain alert, as aftershocks may follow.
