Lahore (Web Desk): In a bid to mitigate the harmful effects of smog, the Punjab government has issued a notification directing the closure of markets by 8pm in four key districts.
The new measure, effective immediately, aims to protect public health as air pollution levels reach hazardous levels.
As per the directive, which applies to the cities of Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala, will remain in force until November 17.
Under this order, all markets in these four districts are required to shut down by 8 pm. Additionally, outdoor activities—including sports, exhibitions, and other public events—will be prohibited during this time.
Dining in restaurants is also banned after 8pm in these areas.
The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency has warned that violations of this order will be met with penalties under the Punjab Environmental Protection Act.
However, essential services such as medical stores, laboratories, petrol stations, and grocery stores will remain unaffected by the restrictions.
Major department stores can continue operations, but only in their medical and grocery sections.
This unprecedented step is part of the provincial government's ongoing efforts to curb the smog crisis, which has severely impacted air quality and public health in the region.
