Islamabad (Web Desk): Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Yahya Afridi, who also chairs the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), established a new committee to devise rules that will define the procedures and criteria for appointment of judges.
The committee, led by Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail of the Supreme Court (SC), includes prominent figures such as Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan, Senators Syed Ali Zafar and Farooq Hamid Naek, and senior advocate Akhtar Hussain.
The committee is tasked with drafting these essential rules, focusing on the methods for assessing and evaluating the fitness of candidates for judicial roles. The deadline for presenting these draft rules is set for December 15, 2024.
This move reflects the commitment of the JCP to streamline and ensure transparency in the judicial selection process.
A series of meetings were held on the same day, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, where members from various courts and legal bodies gathered.
During the meetings, discussions were held on the urgency of implementing these new rules, with input from Supreme Court judges, federal and provincial law ministers, as well as bar council representatives.
The proceedings highlighted the unified effort to refine the framework governing judicial appointments and improve the overall judicial system in Pakistan.
The committee’s work is crucial in setting standards for evaluating potential judges, which will help safeguard the integrity of the legal system and ensure that only qualified individuals are appointed to the bench.
By focusing on these regulatory rules, the committee aims to create a more structured and transparent process for appointing judges across Pakistan's courts.
