Dhaka (Web Desk): A court in Bangladesh has issued a new arrest warrant for Sheikh Hasina, the former premier of the country, who has been in exile since fleeing to India in August following her removal from power.
The latest arrest warrant accuses Hasina of being involved in forced disappearances during her time in office.
She had already been charged with crimes against humanity in a previous warrant. The charges pertain to allegations that during her leadership, over 500 individuals were allegedly kidnapped by security forces, many of whom were detained in secret prisons for extended periods.
Since Hasina's fall from power, a number of victims have come forward with chilling testimonies of their experiences during the time they were missing.
The new arrest order also includes several high-ranking figures from Hasina’s administration, such as her military adviser and other officials from the law enforcement and military sectors.
Bangladesh has asked India to extradite Hasina so she can face trial in connection with these allegations, though the Indian government has not yet responded to the request.
Despite these developments, the chief prosecutor, Tajul Islam, stated that the trial would proceed in accordance with legal processes, ensuring fairness and due diligence.
In the wake of Hasina’s departure from power, numerous supporters of her administration have been detained, with accusations that they were involved in a brutal crackdown that led to the deaths of over 700 people during the political unrest surrounding her removal.
