Demolition of bunkers continues in Kurram as part of peace deal: officials

Peshawar (Web Desk/Agencies): The district administration has ramped up its efforts to dismantle illegal bunkers in Kurram as part of the ongoing peace process under the Kohat agreement.

According to authorities, a total of 988 structures have been demolished so far, with 635 bunkers removed in Upper Kurram and 353 in Lower Kurram.

The operation, which is part of broader efforts to restore peace in the region, targets illegal fortifications that have contributed to the prolonged conflict.

“The demolition process is progressing rapidly, and we will continue until all unauthorized bunkers are removed,” a spokesperson for the district administration stated.

Officials consider this initiative to be a crucial step in achieving lasting peace in Kurram, as the removal of these structures is expected to significantly reduce tensions.

The move is part of the peace agreement, which saw both sides of the conflict consent to the government dismantling their military positions.

The local community has expressed strong support for the operation, with many hopeful that the elimination of these bunkers will usher in a new phase of stability for the district, which has suffered from violence for years.

They said that in the long run, this effort could serve as a significant turning point, leading to improved security and potentially fostering a more peaceful environment for development in Kurram.

The progress so far has been hailed as a promising step toward sustainable peace in the area.
