Islamabad (Web Desk): World Cities Day is being observed across the globe including Pakistan today (Tuesday).
The theme of World Cities Day this year is "Financing sustainable urban future for all".
The Day serves as an opportunity to promote the international community's interest in global urbanization, push forward cooperation among countries in addressing challenges of urbanization and contribute to sustainable urban development around the world.
WHO joins the UN and its partners in observing this day each year, recognizing health and well-being as an integral part of sustainable and inclusive urbanization.
World Cities Day was established on December 27, 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in its resolution A/RES/68/239.
As per the resolution, the General Assembly "decides to designate October 31, beginning in 2014, as World Cities Day, invites States, the United Nations system, in particular UN-Habitat, relevant international organizations, civil society and all relevant stakeholders to observe and raise awareness of the Day". The first World Cities Day was observed in October 2014.
