Lahore (Web Desk): The Punjab government has amended the Cyber Crime Law in order to assist people victim of crime.
According to details, if any has become a victim to a cyber crime, this expanded scope of jurisdiction will help public to lodge an FIR with Punjab Police as well.
Earlier, such cases were only handled by the cyber crime wing of FIA.
In 2016, the Cyber Crime Bill was introduced, laying out a code of conduct on how to deal with the various unique cyber crimes of 21st century. several cases have been registered with the FIA since the bill was passed, many of which also gained media attention.
However, due to the lack of awareness many more cases might have gone unreported until yet because of a on how to lodge a formal complaint. Until now that is.
It has been reported that FIA will now provide technical assistance to the Punjab Police while the law enforcers deal with the cases themselves.
During previous six months, only 30 percent of women lodged complaint against harassed and more noticeably almost all incidents took place on Facebook, a report by Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) says.
DRF considered, there is still insufficient awareness about cyber crime helpline and online harassment. FIA’s National Response Centres for Cyber Crime are also only located at federal and provincial capital cities which limits people’s access to the authority.
Therefore, it is an effort to make Punjab Police capable of dealing with modern cyber crimes by itself, especially given its lack of training in this regard.
