Islamabad (Staff Report): A social studies book, being taught in several private schools in the capital city of Islamabad, highlighted Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) as ‘Pakistan Occupied Kashmir’.
Chapter 7 of ‘The Paramount Social Studies Book 5’ begins with a description, saying, “Pakistan has 4 provinces, namely, Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. Other executive groups embody Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan (formally famous as Northern Areas), Federally Administered Tribal Areas (a semi-autonomous geographical segment in northwest) and Azad Kashmir (Pakistan occupied area of Jammu and Kashmir).”
The book has garnered controversy after a Senator, Sehar Kamran, submitted a letter in the senate drawing attention of authorities over its text and mentioning Azad Jammu and Kashmir as Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
The senator in her letter draws attention of the minister for capital administration and development division over the issue of “public concern” which is “highly objectionable and against our national interest”.
She also urged authorities to supervise the whole curriculum being taught in institutions to avoid such hazardous mistakes.
