Doha (Web Desk): A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has been reached to end a 15-month war in besieged Gaza enclave.
This was announced by the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, in a statement on Wednesday night, following the recent round of talks in Doha.
In a show of support, US President Joe Biden confirmed the ceasefire, which mandates a full halt to military operations, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of all hostages held by both sides.
The arrangement is set to take effect this Sunday, starting with a 42-day period in which 33 Israeli captives will be freed, alongside numerous Palestinian prisoners.
United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his concern over the devastating impact of the conflict, calling for immediate efforts to alleviate the immense human suffering.
The UN, alongside humanitarian organizations, is mobilizing to ensure that vital aid can reach those in desperate need across Gaza.
The World Food Programme (WFP), in particular, has urgently requested more resources and unimpeded access to carry out its life-saving operations.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry has commended the efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the US in facilitating the peace process.
Despite the positive news on the diplomatic front, violence has not ceased as Israeli airstrikes continue to target Gaza, with a recent attack on a residential area killing 12 Palestinians.
Moreover, the West Bank saw an Israeli assault in Jenin, claiming at least six more lives, further illustrating the fragile nature of the ceasefire's implementation.
