Lahore (Web Desk): An accountability court in Lahore on Tuesday remanded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president and former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi to National Accountability Bureaue's (NAB) custody till August 21 in a case related to bribery over development project contracts.
The PTI leader was arrested by the NAB team on Monday shortly after he was released from Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail after completing his 30-day detention, which was under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance.
The former Punjab CM was taken into custody by NAB officials as soon as he came out of the jail and presented was before Judicial Magistrate Khalid Hayat to seek his transitory remand.
Later, police obtained a one-day transitory remand of the PTI leader from a court in Rawalpindi.
The NAB officials presented Parvez Elahi before accountability court Lahore judge, Zubair Shehzad Kiyani.
During the hearing, NAB's counsel Waris Janjua sought Parvez Elahi's 14-day physical remand.
He said that a supplementary grant of Rs72 billion was issued for specific sectors of Gujrat under Elahi as Punjab CM.
Others facing charges in the same case have been remanded, Janjua added.
Parvez Elahi's lawyer Amjad Pervaiz said that cases against his client’s arrests were currently being heard in the Supreme Court (SC) and Lahore High Court (LHC).
He suggested that the court may approve former Punjab CM's physical remand till Monday (Aug 21) as by then the SC and LHC verdict will also be announced.
Upon this Janjua said that NAB was seeking Elahi’s physical remand for 14 days.
However, ADSJ Kiyani remarked that the matter would be decided by the court.
Later, the court handed Elahi in NAB custody till August 21.
