Lahore ATC indicts Shah Mahmood, others in May 9 riots cases

Lahore (Web Desk): An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore has formally indicted former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, and several other members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in connection with the violent riots that took place on May 9, 2023.

The accused, including Qureshi and Dr. Rashid, appeared before Judge Manzar Ali Gul in Kot Lakhpat Jail, where they denied all charges against them.

Other PTI leaders, including Sanam Javed, are also named in the case, which was filed at the Shadman police station.

These protests erupted after the arrest of PTI founder and former premier Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust case, triggering widespread unrest across the country.

The riots led to the destruction of military, civilian, and private properties, causing at least eight deaths and leaving 290 people injured.

Following the protests the protests, law enforcement agencies arrested over 1,900 individuals across Pakistan for their alleged involvement in the disturbances.

It is pertinent to mention that cases were filed against the PTI founder Imran Khan, several party leaders, and workers linked to the unrest, as the authorities seek to hold accountable those responsible for the violence and damage caused during the protests.
