Islamabad (Web Desk): The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast indicating the persistence of a frontal weather system over the northern regions of the country until the morning of January 6.
This system is expected to bring precipitation in the form of rain and snowfall to the hilly areas of Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Northern Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and adjacent mountainous regions.
Meanwhile, dense to moderate fog is forecasted to persist during the early morning and nighttime hours, particularly in the plains of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Upper Sindh.
According to PMD, rainfall has been recorded in several locations across the affected areas.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Chitral recorded 22 mm of rainfall, followed by Kalam with 20 mm, Drosh at 17 mm, Pattan at 16 mm, and several other regions such as Mir Khani, Upper Dir, and Saidu Sharif, which reported lighter rainfall. In Balochistan, Dalbandin received 18 mm of rain, while Kalat recorded 1 mm.
In the Gilgit-Baltistan region, Gopis and Astore recorded 13 mm and 1 mm of precipitation, respectively, while Kashmir saw a lighter spread with Muzaffarabad Airport and City reporting 2 mm and 1 mm of rain.
Snowfall, a consequence of the same weather system, was observed in mountainous regions. Kalam experienced 14 inches of snow, while Chitral and Gupis recorded 7 inches. Astore, Skardu, and Malam Jabba received snowfall amounts ranging from 1 inch to 0.5 inches.
Temperatures in the region dropped significantly, with the lowest recorded temperatures reaching -8°C in Gupis, -4°C in Leh and Parachinar, -3°C in Mirkhani and Hunza, and -2°C in Skardu.
Authorities have urged the public, particularly in the affected regions, to exercise caution when traveling due to the persistent fog and inclement weather, and to stay updated with the latest advisories issued by the PMD.
