Islamabad (Staff Report): Construction work on Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams will start in the ongoing fiscal year, says a press release issued from Prime Minister’s Office.
“Construction work on Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams will be started in fiscal year 2018-19,” said a statement issued after a briefing given to caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk by the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Muzammil Hussain.
“Diamer-Bhasha Dam Project has a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 million acre feet (MAF) and power generation capacity of 4,500 megawatts (MW). Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project will store 1.2 MAF water and generate 800MW electricity,” the statement added.
On Monday, Pakistan military announced financial support for Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand Dam.
“Pakistan Armed Forces contributing to Diamer-Basha & Mohmand Dam Fund. Officers of Pak Army , Navy and Air Force will contribute their 2 days’ pay while soldiers one day’s pay to the announced fund for this national cause,” Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Maj. Gen Asif Gafoor said in a tweet.
The fund launched by the Ministry of Finance last week got its first donation worth Rs 1 million from the chief justice, who bagged support from fellow Pakistanis to cater the ensuing water crisis.
The bank account bearing account No.03-593-299999-001-4 and IBN No. PK06SBPP0035932999990014 was opened after the CJP was briefed about the worsening water crisis in the country which could only be capped by the construction of new dams.
