Lahore High Court summons Sahiwal JIT members

Lahore (Staff Report): The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday summoned members of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), formed to probe Sahiwal incident, on February 4.

LHC Chief Justice Sardar Shameem Ahmed Khan resumed hearing in a plea stating that that formation of a JIT will not uncover the complete facts of Sahiwal incident.

The court asked Inspector General Punjab police Amjad Javed Saleemi as to how far along the investigation was into the incident.

Saleemi told the court that the investigation will take 30 days to complete.

“How was the police allowed to fire?” the chief justice asked the IG. To this, the inspector general told the court that those responsible have been arrested and a JIT has been formed to probe the incident. "CTD officials involved in the incident have been suspended," he told the court.

Moreover, the chief justice told the petitioner that the provincial government does not have the power to form a judicial commission, the federal government does. To this the petitioner replied that a request by the federal government has been submitted.

Furthermore, the judge formed a two-member bench for the hearing of the case and summoned members of the JIT in the next hearing. The court also warned that an incident like this should not happen again and that all district police officers should be made aware.

On Saturday, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) killed four people, including parents and their teenage daughter near Qadirabad.

Khalil, a resident of Kot Lakhpat, Lahore, his wife Nabeela, their 13-year-old daughter, and their neighbour, Zeeshan, were on their way to a wedding in Burewala when they were killed in firing on their car near the toll plaza on GT Road in the Qadirabad area.

Three children in the car survived. Khalil and Nabeela's minor son sustained a bullet injury while their two other daughters remained unhurt.

According to an initial medical examination, Khalil sustained 13 bullet wounds in his chest and head, his wife Nabeela sustained four, Zeeshan was found to have 10 bullet injuries; and Areeba, six bullets.
