Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan and Russia on Monday reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing bilateral relations in key sectors such as trade, investment, agriculture, and energy.
This commitment was expressed during a meeting between President Asif Ali Zardari and a visiting parliamentary delegation led by Valentina Matvienko, the Speaker of the Russian Federation Council, at Aiwan-e-Sadr.
During the meeting, President Zardari warmly welcomed the Russian delegation and underscored the historical ties between the two countries, characterized by mutual respect and a shared ambition to expand cooperation in various domains. Notable attendees included Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and several senators.
The president stressed the importance of fostering cultural connections through increased people-to-people exchanges and scholarship initiatives. He pointed out the significant potential for economic collaboration and called for greater Russian investment in Pakistan.
Recalling his recent interactions with President Vladimir Putin in Ashgabat, Zardari expressed optimism about strengthening ties.
He also sought Russia’s backing for Pakistan’s application to join BRICS, emphasizing how this membership could enhance Pakistan's role in regional and global frameworks.
Both parties highlighted the necessity of diversifying trade and economic partnerships while improving regional connectivity through projects like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the North-South Transport Corridor. Matvienko emphasized Russia’s commitment to its relationship with Pakistan and expressed confidence that her visit would foster deeper cooperation.
She conveyed her satisfaction with the growth of bilateral trade and delivered greetings from President Putin. Additionally, Matvienko congratulated Pakistan on its successful hosting of the SCO Heads of Government meeting and its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
President Zardari expressed appreciation for Russia's support regarding Pakistan's UN candidacy, reinforcing the foundation for future collaboration between the two nations.
