New Zealand beat Pakistan by 73 runs in first ODI

Napier(Web Desk): New Zealand dominated Pakistan in the first One-Day International (ODI) of their three-match series, clinching a 73-run victory at McLean Park in Napier.

The hosts set an imposing target of 345 after posting a total of 344/9 in their 50 overs. Mark Chapman was the standout performer, smashing a brilliant 132, while Daryl Mitchell’s 76 anchored the middle order. The pair shared a massive 199-run partnership for the fourth wicket, rescuing New Zealand from a precarious position after they had slumped to 50/3 early on.

Pakistan’s response faltered as their top order struggled to build partnerships. Usman Khan managed 39, and Abdullah Shafique contributed 36, while captain Mohammad Rizwan added 30. 

Babar Azam fought valiantly with a steady 78 but lacked the support needed to steer the chase.

Despite a fiery cameo from debutant Mohammad Abbas, who struck 52 from just 26 balls, Pakistan was bowled out for 271, well short of the target. Irfan Khan Niazi impressed with the ball, picking up three wickets, while Haris Rauf and Akif Javed chipped in with two each.

Pakistan's debutants faced a steep learning curve, but New Zealand’s clinical performance leaves them in a commanding position ahead of the next match.

With the win, New Zealand takes a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, with the next ODI set to take place in Hamilton on Wednesday.
