PM Shehbaz recalls PIA's golden era, sees bright future under new owners after privatisation

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed optimism that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set for a transformative journey under the ownership of the Arif Habib Consortium.

Speaking at the ceremony for signing the privatization documents, he said the airline would see significant improvements in punctuality, in-flight service, overall performance, and professional standards.

PM Shehbaz congratulated the nation on reaching this milestone, calling the privatization a historic step for the country.

He praised Arif Habib and his team, describing them as prominent business leaders who have consistently represented Pakistan positively and contributed to the nation’s development.

The premier emphasized that the new management’s primary focus would be ensuring the safety and comfort of passengers.

Reflecting on the airline’s legacy, PM Shehbaz recalled that PIA had once enjoyed a golden era in the 1960s, being a source of pride both domestically and internationally.

He also commended federal ministers, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for their dedication to the national interest, and appreciated Adviser on Privatization Muhammad Ali for successfully guiding the privatization process.

The prime minister highlighted that the privatization was conducted transparently and broadcast live for public accountability.

He shared that the final bid amounted to Rs180 billion, with Rs135 billion earmarked for revamping PIA and Rs55 billion going to the government.

Expressing confidence in the airline’s future, he said the new owners, through innovation and persistent effort, would restore PIA to its former glory, providing the public with top-quality travel services while elevating Pakistan’s reputation on the global stage.

The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, COAS & CDF Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, along with several federal ministers.

Adviser on Privatization Muhammad Ali briefed the audience on the key features of the deal, assuring that the people of Pakistan would ultimately benefit from an improved and modernized PIA.
