A broken symphony: AR Rahman, Saira Banu end their 29-year marriage

Mumbai (Web Desk): Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their decision to separate after nearly 30 years of marriage. Their lawyer, Vandana Shah, confirmed the news on Tuesday. The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, share three children—son AR Ameen and daughters Khatija Rahman and Raheema Rahman.

In a joint statement, Rahman and Banu expressed that they had come to this difficult decision due to “significant emotional strain.” While they acknowledged their enduring love for one another, they admitted that the tensions in their relationship had led to an “insurmountable gap” that neither could overcome.

On Wednesday morning, Rahman shared a poignant message on X (formerly Twitter) reflecting on the emotional weight of the separation. “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end,” he wrote. “Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again.”

Accompanying the note with a bouquet emoji, Rahman concluded by thanking his friends and fans for their understanding and respecting their privacy during this “fragile chapter.” He also used the hashtag #ARRSairaaBreakup.

Before issuing the joint statement with Rahman, Banu released her own message, echoing the desire for privacy during this difficult time.

Their children, too, have spoken out, urging the public to respect the family’s wishes. Khatija Rahman posted on her Instagram story, “I would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Thank you for your consideration.”

Her brother, AR Ameen, shared a similar sentiment, stating, “We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time.”
