Islamabad (Web Desk): The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday reserved its judgment in the Toshakhana criminal case while ordering an eye examination for incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal, focusing on Khan’s condition in prison and the facilities provided to him.
During the proceedings, PTI lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar and the Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan appeared before the court.
Barrister Safdar, who the SC had appointed as ‘friend of court’ and allowed him to meet PTI founder at Adiala jail, submitted a report stating that Imran Khan expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements and food provisions in jail.
CJP Afridi remarked that the matter would remain pending until the Islamabad High Court (IHC) delivers its decision, and a suitable ruling regarding Khan’s health would be issued.
He emphasized that the health issue was of utmost importance and that the government’s stance on it was necessary.
The attorney general told the court that it was the state’s responsibility to ensure proper healthcare facilities for prisoners and that if a prisoner was not satisfied, the government must take appropriate measures. He assured the court that the government would comply with all judicial directives.
On the request concerning Khan’s health, the top court directed that his eye examination be conducted before February 16, and he should also be allowed to speak to his children before that date.
Responding to Salman Safdar’s request, the court clarified that the medical examination would not take place in the presence of family members, although any books recommended by doctors for reading would be provided. The bench also praised Safdar’s work and lauded the government’s cooperation.
The SC emphasised respecting the jurisdiction of lower courts and reserved its verdict on the Toshakhana appeal.
