IMF chief meets PM Shehbaz, reaffirms support for reforms in Pakistan

Dubai (Web Desk/Agencies): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held an important meeting with Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, on the sidelines of the 2025 World Governments Summit in Dubai.

During the meeting, the two leaders assessed Pakistan’s progress under its ongoing IMF-supported programme, emphasizing the government's commitment to implementing critical reforms aimed at restoring macroeconomic stability and fostering sustainable growth.

PM Shehbaz Minister highlighted the significant strides made under the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which has been central in stabilizing the national economy.

He assured Georgieva of Pakistan’s unwavering dedication to advancing reforms, particularly in areas such as fiscal management, energy sector restructuring, and tax policy overhaul, all of which are key to ensuring long-term economic health.

Kristalina Georgieva praised Pakistan’s reform trajectory, noting the country’s improving economic indicators, such as growth and inflation control, which suggest a recovery path.

The IMF chief also acknowledged leadership and commitment of PM Shehbaz in driving the country’s reform agenda, underscoring that the ongoing structural changes are critical for establishing a foundation for inclusive, sustainable economic development.

The IMF MD reiterated the fund’s continued backing for Pakistan’s reform efforts, stressing the importance of maintaining fiscal discipline, implementing structural reforms, and upholding good governance practices as these elements are essential for securing Pakistan’s long-term economic stability and creating opportunities for future growth.

Following the meeting, the IMF chief took to her X timeline saying, “Wonderful to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his team. I am encouraged by their strong commitment to Pakistan’s IMF-supported reforms and support their decisive actions to pave the way to higher growth and more jobs for Pakistan’s youthful population.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz also responded that in their meeting, they discussed Pakistan’s economic progress and the ongoing reforms, besides reaffirming their shared commitment to achieving sustainable growth and financial stability.

“We appreciate IMF’s continued support as Pakistan transitions from macroeconomic stability to a path of sustained economic growth and prosperity,” PM Shehbaz said.
