Torrential rains lash Karachi, urban flooding disrupts city life

Karachi (Web Desk): Continuous spells of heavy rain in Karachi brought life in the city to a standstill, as urban flooding left water accumulated on roads and in residential areas.

According to reports, several neighbourhoods, including Surjani Town, Nagan Chowrangi, Nishtar Basti, and Essa Nagri, were badly affected as rainwater entered homes, causing severe distress to residents.

The Malir River overflowed near Ayub Goth Bridge and Lasi Goth, while Thado Dam reached capacity, leading to flooding in both the Lyari and Malir rivers.

The overflow from Thado Dam spread as far as Motorway M-9, disrupting traffic on the Hyderabad-bound track and resulting in long queues of vehicles.

Rescue teams and city authorities carried out operations in Sohrab Goth, Hasan Manan Colony, and Gulshan-e-Iqbal, where people trapped in floodwater were shifted to safer locations.

In light of the deteriorating situation, the acting Commissioner of Karachi announced the closure of all educational institutions for the day.

Meanwhile, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the affected areas to review drainage measures and instructed the relevant departments to speed up emergency relief operations for the assistance of citizens.

Residents, however, have urged the government to resolve the city’s long-standing drainage problems on a permanent basis so that the recurring damage and disruption during the monsoon season can finally be prevented.
