NDMA issues alert for possible urban flooding in Islamabad, northern Punjab

Islamabad (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about potential urban flooding in Islamabad and parts of northern Punjab over the next few hours as heavy rains lash the region.

In an alert from the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC), the authority highlighted that Murree, Galiyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, and nearby areas are most likely to be affected.

The NDMA explained that the development of large cumulus clouds on Friday, fueled by extreme heat, could lead to intense downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Officials also cautioned about the risk of landslides in hilly areas, possible damage to weak infrastructure, and prolonged power outages.

Residents have been urged to exercise caution by staying away from trees and fragile structures, securing vehicles in safe places, and avoiding unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

Separately, the NDMA has cautioned that several districts of South Punjab may experience flash floods and landslides as heavy rainfall continues in intervals over the next two days.

A statement issued by the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) on Saturday noted that strong showers are expected to hit Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Ahmedpur, Liaquatpur, Zahir Pir, Rajanpur, Khanpur, Muzaffargarh, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, and Sadiqabad.

The authority called upon district administrations and citizens to remain watchful and take preventive measures in view of the looming weather threats.

It warned that recurring spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds could trigger flooding in urban centers and submerge low-lying localities.

There is also a risk of falling trees, damage to weak structures, power breakdowns, and traffic hazards due to low visibility caused by rainfall and blowing dust.

Residents have been urged to refrain from unnecessary travel during the rains, avoid sheltering near trees or fragile buildings, keep vehicles parked in secure areas, and comply with the safety directions issued by officials.
