Basant returns to Lahore after 25 years as kites soar again amid tight security

Lahore (Web Desk): The Basant festival officially commenced in Lahore shortly after midnight on Thursday, following the lifting of an 18-year ban by the Punjab government.

The vibrant kite-flying event is set to continue for three days, concluding on February 8.

The ban, originally imposed in 2007 due to numerous injuries and deaths caused by sharp kite strings (manja) and celebratory gunfire, has now been lifted under new legal provisions designed to ensure the safety of participants.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated that the festival is being held under strict supervision, with law enforcement agencies deployed across Lahore to maintain public safety. She highlighted that stringent measures have been implemented to prevent any casualties during the celebrations.

Recently, the Punjab government promulgated the Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance, 2025, which provides the legal basis for the resumption of Basant festivities. Under this ordinance, police officers of sub-inspector rank and above are authorized to conduct searches and make arrests without warrants when supported by credible evidence. This legislation is currently awaiting approval from the Punjab Assembly.

As Lahore’s skies once again fill with colorful kites, authorities remain vigilant to ensure a safe and joyful Basant celebration after nearly two decades.
