K-P govt announces Rs1.5 million compensation for swat flash flood victims' families

Swat (Web Desk): Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah visited Swat to oversee ongoing rescue efforts following the devastating flash flood in the Swat River, which resulted in numerous casualties and left many people trapped in rapidly rising waters.

The flood struck near the Mingora Bypass, leading to a significant loss of life and property. During his visit, the Chief Secretary announced that the families of the deceased would receive compensation of Rs. 1.5 million per victim.

Shahab Ali Shah confirmed that out of 85 individuals stranded in the river, 58 had been successfully rescued, while 11 bodies had been recovered so far. He assured the public that search operations were continuing in hopes of locating the remaining missing persons.

In light of the incident, the Chief Secretary stated that several officials had been suspended due to negligence, including the district administration. He emphasized that an inquiry committee would be formed to thoroughly investigate the incident and hold those accountable for failures in the response efforts.

Regarding the rescue operations, Shahab Ali Shah explained that adverse weather conditions and time constraints had initially hindered the deployment of helicopters. However, he reassured the public that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government was taking swift and decisive actions to prevent future disasters, including imposing a ban on all forms of excavation in the Swat River and initiating a crackdown on illegal encroachments in the area.

To safeguard against similar tragedies in the future, the Chief Secretary announced that comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) had been established for tourists visiting the region to ensure their safety.

Shahab Ali Shah expressed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the provincial government to the grieving families, reiterating the government’s commitment to provide full support during this challenging time.
