Waqar Syed's tenure as NCCIA chief nears end amid corruption allegations: sources

Islamabad (Web Desk): The government has decided to replace Waqaruddin Syed, Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), amid allegations of large-scale corruption amounting to millions of rupees, the sources claimed.

According to Rizwan Jarral, Head of Programming, Neo News, the sources revealed that the move is part of an ongoing cleanup operation initiated by the country’s influential circles.

As per the sources, Additional Inspector General Kamran Yousaf and senior police officer Syed Khurram are being considered as potential candidates to lead the agency following Waqar Syed’s removal.

Sources further revealed that the decision aims to ensure transparency and accountability within the organization.

However, no formal statement has yet been issued by the government or the Ministry of Interior regarding the matter.

It is worth mentioning that Waqar Syed was appointed as the NCCIA's first director general in April 2025.

Earlier on October 25, the sources disclosed that Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed anger over reports of corruption within the NCCIA and ordered immediate and stringent action against the accused officials.

The sources claimed that the scope of the inquiry has been widened to include all officers suspected of involvement in corrupt practices.

They added that ongoing investigation—initiated after a series of targeted raids—seeks to determine whether certain officers misused the agency’s name and authority to conduct unlawful activities.

The sources, quoting the interior minster, said that accountability within country’s top cyber crime investigation body is vital to restoring public trust and upholding the integrity of national institutions.
