Pakistan to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on June 7 as Zil Hajj moon not sighted

Islamabad (Web Desk): In Pakistan, Eid-ul-Azha will be celebrated on June 7, 2025 (Saturday) as the moon of Zil Hajj was not sighted, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad announced on Tuesday.

According to the announcement, the first day of Zil Hajj will be observed on Thursday, May 29, 2025. 
Earlier, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee held its meeting in Islamabad to sight the Zil Hajj moon for the year 1446 Hijri.

Meanwhile, meetings of the Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees were also held separately at their respective headquarters to observe the Eid-ul-Azha moon.

In Lahore, religious scholar Mufti Ramzan Sialvi confirmed that the moon was not sighted in the city and noted that the final decision regarding the moon sighting would be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

Similarly, sources from the zonal committee in Karachi reported that no moon sighting testimony had been received from any part of Sindh.

The earlier reports based on information from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) and Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has suggested that the moon’s age this evening (Tuesday) will be only 11 hours, a period deemed too short for it to be visible according to astronomical standards.

SUPARCO had also predicted that the first day of Zil Hajj is expected to fall on May 29, which would place the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha on Saturday, June 7, assuming the calculations remain accurate.

Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated on the 10th day of Zil-Hajj, which is the last month of the Islamic calendar and marks the culmination of Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. It also commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) willingness to sacrifice his son to show obedience to God.
