Islamabad (Web Desk): The International Day of the Markhor is being observed today (Saturday) across the globe, including Pakistan.
This global observance highlights the importance of conserving the Markhor, an iconic wild goat species native to the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia. Countries such as Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan are home to this majestic animal, known for its distinctive twisted horns and remarkable agility in rugged terrains.
The Markhor, also Pakistan's national animal, thrives in mountainous regions with sparse forests, typically found at elevations ranging from 600 to 3,600 meters.
The Markhor holds both ecological and economic significance. It plays a vital role in maintaining biodiversity within its natural habitat and also contributes to the local economy, particularly through eco-tourism and community-led conservation initiatives.
However, the species faces several threats that endanger its survival. Habitat loss, illegal hunting including poaching, and the growing impact of climate change are the primary challenges putting pressure on Markhor populations.
Recognizing the need for urgent action, the United Nations (UN) designated May 24 as the International Day of the Markhor.
The day was first observed in 2024 and serves as a call to action for UN Member States, civil society, and stakeholders around the world to support conservation efforts and promote regional cooperation.
The Markhor has been listed as “near threatened” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2014 and has been included in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1992.
This day underscores the importance of preserving the Markhor and its habitat not only as an ecological imperative but also as an opportunity to enhance regional economies and promote sustainable development.
Strengthening conservation measures and raising awareness about the Markhor's plight will ultimately benefit the broader ecosystem and the communities that depend on it.
