SC additional registrar challenges contempt notice

Islamabad (Web Desk): Additional Registrar of the Supreme Court (SC) filed an Intra Court Appeal (ICA) challenging the contempt of court notice issued against him.

In his petition, Abbas requested the court to halt the ongoing proceedings and to revoke the order that led to his dismissal from service.

A six-member bench, led by Justice Jamal Mandokhail, has been assigned to hear the appeal, which also includes Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Athar Minallah, Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Shahid Waheed, and Ms Justice Musarrat Hilali.

A two-member bench, headed by Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Aqeel Abbasi, reserved the verdict of the case on Thursday.

Earlier this week, on January 21, the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) issued a notification removing Abbas from his position, citing his actions in improperly assigning a case meant for a Constitutional Bench to a regular bench.

This decision was made on the grounds that such actions misused the court’s time and resources.

The Registrar of the Supreme Court was instructed to investigate the matter.

In his appeal, Abbas argues that he did not deliberately defy any judicial orders but merely submitted a note to the Practice and Procedure Committee regarding the issue.

He has requested the top court that the contempt proceedings be suspended.

The larger bench is set to consider the case on January 27, as the legal battle continues.
